Hidden Falls’ Takatz Bay to Open July 20, 2017
Currently we have 25,000 chum collected for broodstock behind the barrier in Kasnyku Bay. The Hidden Falls staff took the first 4 million eggs yesterday and continue to pass chum through the barrier net daily. Observations by spotter pilots, fishing boats, and our drone show good numbers of chum in Kasnyku and around Round Island to Pt. Turbot, although the fish move around constantly. Chum have been observed in Takatz as well. Given that the 175,000 chum still needed for broodstock have not been secured and they are moving in and out of Kasnyku I have decided to have a discrete Takatz Bay...

Deep Inlet opened to Trolling on Saturday. There was some effort by the Troll fleet, although I don’t have catch numbers yet. Sunday was a Seine day; using preliminary numbers it appears approximately 120,000 chum salmon were caught. This was a pleasant surprise and strengthens my belief that the fall run is anomalous in run timing and behavior. It seems likely that this week will see the largest catch of this year’s fall run. The last push to the finish line is expected to occur today. We need 185,000 lbs to complete cost recovery. Almost certainly we will open Deep Inlet on Saturday for Troll, Sunday for Seine, and Monday/Tuesday for Gillnet. This is not official until ADF&G publishes an announcement, which should occur today or tomorrow. ADF&G has been informed of progress each day, and they are aware of need to get announcement out prior to weekend.

Fish moved in yesterday in decent numbers. Caught approximately 200,000 lbs today. That makes 1.24 million lbs to go. Boats will fish tomorrow if there are fish in the area.

Deep Inlet cost recovery will begin August 10th and continue August 11th. This will be the first look at how many chum have moved into Deep Inlet. The NSRAA website will be updated daily on catch. Approximately 300,000 chum will need to be caught during the closure.
