Support Alaska Hatcheries at Board of Fisheries - Alaska Board of Fisheries Proposals. Your voice is needed. The board of fisheries will take up three hatchery proposals at the statewide meeting. Proposals 170, 171, and 172 seek to impose broad, preemptive reductions or moratoria on Alaska’s private nonprofit (PNP) salmon hatchery program without demonstrating a causal link between hatchery production and the specific […]

The Deep Inlet THA will reopen starting Tuesday with the following rotation for this week(stat wk 35)-Tuesday-Troll, Wednesday-seine, Thur/Fri-gillnet, Saturday seine. August 22-Deep Inlet Cost Recovery Progress Update - Based upon Friday morning Deep Inlet cost recovery progress, a Deep Inlet reopening announcement will not be issued at this time. At current harvest rates it is unlikely our cost recovery goal will be met by end of day Saturday. The next potential reopening announcement has been pushed back to Monday, August 25th and will […]
Return Update-August 19th - Deep Inlet Last week a total of 276,000 chum salmon returned to Deep Inlet. The majority of the harvest, 156,000, occurred in the pink salmon seine fishery in Eastern Channel. Troll harvest in Sitka Sounds also increased last week with approximately 60,000 chum harvested by 67 troll permit holders. An additional 35,000 chum were harvested […]Cost Recovery at Deep Inlet August 10 – 125,000 lbs
Cost recovery began at Deep Inlet on Wednesday August 10th. Two boats harvested 125,000 lbs. Sex ratio was 57% male. We will need to take otolith samples to determine what proportion, if any, is Hidden Falls stock as that could skew the sex ratio. The 100 fish sample taken last night had several partially spawned females which would certainly be from the HF stock.
Boats are fishing again today.
Hidden Falls Egg Take Goal Reached August 8, 2016
177,000,000 chum eggs were taken at Hidden Falls Hatchery as of Monday. This will allow maximizing each program at Kasnyku, Takatz, and SE Cove.
The NSRAA board will be discussing moving some of these fry to Thomas Bay and Malmesbury in 2017
Hidden Falls Broodstock Update – July 18
Broodstock currently stands at 75,000 chum behind the barrier net, all volitional entry. The F/V Windwalker and F/V Reiver arrived this morning to actively collect another 50,000 brood fish. Egg takes will begin July 19. We still need another 45,000 fish beyond the 125,000 or 180,000 fish all-in.
Spotter pilot reports have ranged from 200,000 to 750,000 chum in the SHA. So far this morning we are not seeing that kind of volume. We also have two cost recovery seiners looking for opportunity. Next update will be tomorrow.
Hidden Falls Closed to Fishing June 27, 2016
Hidden Falls returns are exceedingly poor so we are discontinuing openings. Otolith samples from Homeshore show better results for Kasnyku and Takatz 4.0 chum strategy compared to regular 2.0 gram fish, but there just isn’t the abundance to make that very meaningful. We are developing a plan for obtaining the chum egg take goal. The best hope is that with the closure sufficient numbers of chum return to Kasnyku. The backup plan to that is 1) Hidden Falls stock at Deep Inlet, 2) using fall Deep Inlet chum to back fill some of the HF egg production, 3) obtain eggs from Gunnuk Creek, and 4) getting 20 million eggs from DIPAC.
A new release strategy is being developed for Kasnyku Bay chum fry in 2017. I’ll have weekly updates on Hidden Falls broodstock developments.
